Ultrasonic investigation (USI) is a method of shooting inner organs using sonic waves. Within recent years, ultrasound investigation has entered in medicine as an irreplaceable examination and was certified to be harmless for body. As a more informative and practically harmless method, it is widely used in investigation of organs of abdominal cavity, kidneys, organs of small pelvis, thyroid glands, heart, vessels etc.
This method is dispensable for tracking pregnancy period. ultrasonic examination enables not only to identify existence of pregnancy, but also, to observe development of an embryo, pregnancy failure (donmuş hamiləlik donmuş – burada nə demək istəyir?), ectopic pregnancy, and suspect about existence of chromosome pathology of embryo.
Between 10th and 13th weeks it is possible to detect ultrasound markers (signs) of embryo’s chromosome pathology – thickening of an embryo’s front distance and absence of an embryo’s a nose bone.
Thickness of an embryo’s front distance – is a size of an area between the embryo’s skin and soft tissues surrounding jugular region of the spine. Problems of a front distance are detected both in a normal embryo and those with chromosome diseases (e.g. Down syndrome). However, it is typical for embryos with chromosome pathologies to have a front distance with thickness exceeding 2.5mm. Front distance disappears after 14th week of pregnancy in all embryos and therefore it is necessary to control it in a period when it is possible to do this – between 10-13th weeks of pregnancy. In embryos with chromosome pathologies, ossification process occurs much later, that’s why during ultrasonic examinations within this period absence of a nose bone may be a sign of chromosome pathology of the embryo.
